Thiagarajar Polytechnic College was established in 1958 by the late Thiru.
Krrumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, a doyen of industry and education.
It was at a time when India had just entered its second decade of independence and was faced with the challenges of industrial development and growth.
It was at a time when skilled technicians were the need of the hour and educational opportunities to fulfill the need were hardly available.
It was also at a time when polytechnics were being set up to bring out technicians who were well a head of his time, and acting on them, a humble beginning was made with the introduction of just three diploma programs and today it offers as many ass nine diploma programs and one post diploma program.
Our founder's perception and vision of an ideal institution for technical education were well a head of his time, and acting on them, a humble beginning was made with the introduction of just three diploma programs and today it offers as many as nine diploma programs and one post diploma program.
The challenging goals set by him were achieved in a short span of time and the polytechnic soon rose glory and fame.
As of today, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College is an institution with a great reputationfor excellence gained over the last 46 years of its purposeful existence. This glorious achievement places it among the most popular polytechnics in Tamilnadu and enables it to select the best from the vast number of school - leavers seeking admission every year into the polytechnic.
The polytechnic is situated well within the city limits of salem and located about a kilometer from the city's railway station. Our infrastructure is well - developed and very impressive. The polytechnic has a total
building area of about 12,000 sq.mts. A casual walk through our extensive
campus , extending an area of about 50 acres of land, will highlight

A clean and green campus providing a cool environment even in summer.An aesthetically architectured " Silver - Jubilee Block" mainly serving the administrative function. This was constructed in 1983 in commemoration of the Silver Jubilee of our polytechnic.A massive two - storey main building housing airy class rooms.
Laboratories
Several kinds of laboratories and workshops installed with the latest machinery / equipment appropriate to the range of programs offered. Our Textile laboratories are very well - equipped and are the pride of the institutions. A busy and up - to - date computer center using the latest machines and a variety of licensed and custom - made software.
Library
A well - stacked library and a spacious reading room. To help the needy and poor students in the matter of supply of text books, a book - bank scheme is established in the polytechnic. The Xerox facility & Internet facility are also available in the library. A well - equipped audio - visual center including a wide range of audio - visual aids.
Administration
Modern office automation equipment. A Continuing Education Center bustling with activity and boasting of its own computer laboratory equipped with state - of - the - art machines.Two auditoria, one in the open, admidst greenery and foliage and the other within a building. A multi - purpose hall that can be used for any event from examinations to indoor sports meets.
Hostel
A large hostel to accommodate 250 boys, a separate hostel to accommodate 100 girls. A sports ground and associated sports equipment and accessories. A guest house situated at a quit location in the campus.

An extension counter of Central Bank of India in the campus. A Students ' Cooperative Stores rending essential stationery items at affordable rates. A canteen, a vehicle shed and other essential amenities.

Placement
Our polytechnic has an active Placement Section, managed by a Placement officer and supporting faculty. The section organises the campus interviews every year for the benefit of the students of all the department in the polytechnic.
