Site for Anna University of Technology identified
Madurai: The site for Anna University of Technology, Madurai, has been identified at Kodikulam near Surya Nagar, K. Pudur, according to the District Collector, C. Kamaraj.
Following the initiative of Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers, M.K. Alagiri, to establish the Anna University of Technology here, the State government had given its nod a few months ago.
He had made an appeal for establishing the facility as it would enable the students in this region to pursue higher education.
Subsequently, the Chief Minister, M. Karunanidhi, announced the formation of the university in the Assembly.
As a first step, R. Murugesan was appointed as Vice-Chancellor.
On assuming office recently, he told reporters that the university would decide on the site and begin construction work soon.
Out of the three locations identified for the university, the officials, led by Mr. Kamaraj, approved the Kodikulam site.
According to a press release issued here by Mr. Kamaraj on Friday, land measuring 83.71 acres had been earmarked for the University and a sum of Rs. 72.26 crore allotted for the construction.
Six full-time courses
The university, which was functioning temporarily from the Madurai Kamaraj University's old campus on Alagarkoil Road, had obtained necessary approval to offer six full-time postgraduate courses, besides MBA and MCA courses, from anytime in August.A senior official said that the poromboke land at Kodikulam tank would be reclassified soon and assigned to the Department of Higher Education.
Subsequent to this, construction work would commence on the site, Mr. Kamaraj added.
