After first phase of BE counselling, no takers for 3 colleges
Chennai: Three self-financing engineering colleges have failed to attract even one student in the first phase of the single window counselling for the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA 2010) which ended on Tuesday.
Only one institution, the Central Electrochemical Research Institute (CECRI) in Karaikal has managed to fill up all the seats in the academic stream counselling which commenced on July 5.
According to TNEA secretary V Rhymend Uthariaraj, the absenteeism rate of students in the first phase counselling has come down by 5% compared to the previous year.
At 7pm on Tuesday, 37,216 BE/BTech seats were filled up, of which 5,860 were allotted in the Anna University and its constituent colleges and 4,243 seats were filled up in government and aided engineering colleges. The remaining 27,113 seats were chosen in self-financing engineering colleges,” Uthariaraj said.
Several self-financing institutions located in and around Chennai and Coimbatore districts have managed to fill up a majority of their seats in different branches barring those reserved for Muslims, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates. In the second phase of counselling, which begins on Wednesday and ends on July 31 candidates with cut-off scores between 168.50 and 125 will be called.
In all 73,439 seats are available on offer including 71 (only for SC/ST/SC Arundhathiyar) in government and aided colleges and 1,635 seats in Anna University and its constituent colleges.
“This year there has been a revival in demand for the Computer Science engineering course (5,882 seats), while demand for Civil Engineering (2,954) is lesser compared to the trend witnessed in the previous year. The highest number of seats have been filled in the Electronics and Communication Engineering branch with 9,096 candidates opting for it,” Uthariaraj added.
Mechanical Engineering has emerged as the second most preferred course with 6,218 seats being filled up.
In Tamil medium, 110 seats have been filled in Civil Engineering and 99 seats in Mechanical Engineering streams.
