Counselling for maritime courses starts
Chennai: Single window counselling for admitting students from across the country to maritime courses in institutions affiliated to the Indian Maritime University (IMU) got underway at Uthandi near here on Monday.
According to IMU vice chancellor P Vijayan, 4,886 candidates from across the country have been called for the counselling to fill up 2,100-odd seats in the diploma in nautical science and BTech in Marine Engineering courses offered at the IMU and 28 affiliated institutions. Of these around 700 seats are sponsored by shipping companies.
Pointing out that there was good demand for the maritime courses, Vijayan predicted that this year too a situation could arise wherein all the seats were filled up before the counselling drew to a close. Last year, the IMU had to defer it counselling as all seats were filled on day five of the counselling. “If a similar situation arises, candidates who do not get a seat will be put in the wait list and be accommodated against future vacancies,” the vice chancellor of the central university said.
As per schedule, the counselling is slated to conclude on July 25.
Vijayan said that on a recommendation from a committee the fee for the diploma in nautical science and BTech in Marine Engineering has been revised to Rs 3.25 lakh.
