BE counselling process tweaked to avoid clash
Eleventh-Hour Change In MBBS Admissions Schedule Not To Affect Top-Ranking Students
Chennai: There will be no clash in dates of counselling for BE/BTech admissions with that of the MBBS counselling schedule in Tamil Nadu despite an eleventh hour change in the medical counselling schedule this year.
In consultation with the higher education ministry, authorities of the Anna University have decided to alter the Tamil Nadu Engineering Admissions (TNEA 2010) itinerary without changing the dates for counselling announced earlier to ensure that top rankers are not inconvenienced in any way.
Originally, the counselling for MBBS admissions was scheduled to begin on June 21. However, due to the World Classical Tamil Conference slated in Coimbatore next week, which would affect the mobility of students from that region to Chennai, the health ministry on Saturday decided to postpone the commencement of the counselling session to June 28.
Incidentally, the higher education ministry had much earlier released the TNEA 2010 schedule as per which the single window counselling was to begin on June 28.
It has been a convention to conduct the counselling for BE/B.Tech programmes after the medical admissions are over as the latter requires a higher cut-off mark. This would ensure that students who miss out on a MBBS seat could compete for an engineering seat if they had studied mathematics in Plus Two in addition to science subjects.
If the counselling begins simultaneously for medical and engineering degree courses, then the top ranking students would be deprived of options and have to choose from either of the courses.
“This issue has been discussed and we have asked the Anna University authorities to begin the counselling for academic stream (the main counselling) from July 5 or so. Until then, they can conduct the counselling for other categories of students such as those falling under the sports quota and physically challenged categories. Counselling for the vocational stream candidates could be done thereafter. By the time the main counselling for academic stream aspirants begins, the medical counselling would be into its second week eliminating any possibility of a clash in slots for top ranking students,” a higher education ministry official explained.
Authorities had initially planned to begin the counselling for academic stream candidates from June 30 or July 1 immediately after the sports quota and physically challenged quota seats were filled.
With the alteration in the itinerary, top rankers will have the option of choosing a medical seat first and then decide to shift careers, if they so desire, by picking a BE/BTech seat through the single window counselling conducted by Anna University as well.
However, as per a government rule such students must give a written undertaking surrendering their medical seat while attending the TNEA counselling.
