Distance education students find it hard to get examination schedule

Tirunelveli: A section of the first-year students of Distance and Continuing Education of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University had to run from pillar to post to get the schedule for the first semester examination that commenced on Friday.

Though the first year students of distance education mode of MSU were told during one of their contact seminars that their first semester examination would commence on May 21, most of the candidates did not receive the examination schedule till May 20.
When the students, who were completely unaware of the examination centre allotted to them, went to Sadakkathullah Appa College on Friday morning, they were told to rush to St. John's College, Palayamkottai, and the students had to drive at lightning pace to reach the actual examination centre.

“As language will be the first examination always, I came prepared,” said a woman candidate from Samathanapuram in Palayamkottai.

The problem continued even after that as the students, who had opted for Hindi as their first language, were given Tamil question paper.

“I contacted Controller of Examination, MSU, K.S.P. Durairaj over the phone to tell him that students of Hindi were being given Tamil question papers. He assured that he would e-mail the Hindi question paper immediately to St. John's College. Subsequently, the e-mail was downloaded and given to the students,” said a candidate's husband.

He also complained that no study material for Hindi was given. “After my efforts to get the study materials from the MSU failed, I managed to get it from Hindi Prasar Sabha, Chennai, through my friends,” he said.

When he went home for lunch around 1.30 p.m., the postman delivered the examination schedule, sent by the MSU on May 20, as suggested by the seal on the envelope.

A DD and CE official of MSU said they would be only giving the syllabus for the Hindi paper and not study materials and hence, the students themselves should prepare their study materials based on the curriculum provided by the university.

Admitting that the examination schedule did not reach the candidates in time and that Tamil question papers were wrongly distributed to students of Hindi, Dr. Durairaj assured that such incidents would not recur.
