Medical college at Tiruvarur to start functioning from this academic year
  • Work on building with 300 beds completed
  • All construction work to be over by this month-end
Tiruvarur: Tiruvarur Government Medical College will start functioning from the forthcoming academic year, said Health Minister M. R. K. Panneerselvam here on Saturday.

After inspecting the construction works going on for the college, he expressed satisfaction over the progress and said that 90 per cent of the works were nearing completion. Officials and engineers had been instructed to complete all construction works by April 30.
The Minister said that Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi had made a recommendation to Union Health Minister Gulam Nabi Azad and Indian Medical Council for starting government medical colleges at Tiruvarur and Villupuram from this academic year.

With respect to Tiruvarur college, an outpatient ward had started functioning since February.

Work on construction of a building with 300-beds had been completed and in-patient services would also be shifted from the old government hospital in the town to this building soon.

Blood bank and laboratory buildings had also been completed. Hostel buildings and residential buildings were coming up.

The college is located within the Collectorate complex. A sum of Rs. 100 crore has been allotted by the state Government for the construction works for the medical college.

Dairy Development Minister U. Mathivanan, Collector M. Chandrasekaran, Nagapattinam MP A. K. S. Vijayan and Dean Ramakrishnan accompanied the Minister during his visit.
