College for women to be set up in Vyasarpadi
Chennai: Sriram Educational Trust will launch a series of initiatives for the benefit of underprivileged students of north Chennai in the next few years in memory of its founder M. E. Devarajan.
Addressing mediapersons here on Friday, the trust's chairman S. Mohan said an arts and science college for women would be established in Vyasarpadi in 2011-12. A polytechnic college would also be started there.
The Sriram group ofinstitutions comprises four colleges and a school in Veppampattu, nearly 40 km from the city. Most of the 6,000 students come from lower income group families in Tiruvallur district, he added.
The trustee, M. D. G. Rajkumar, said the trust was founded in 1983 by Devarajan, who was an entrepreneur, to reach out to rural students.
A bust of Devarajan is scheduled to be unveiled by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday to honour his achievements in the education field.
