Deemed univs also make a mark in R&D
List Of Top 20 In Research Includes Six Privately-Run Institutions, According To Global Database
Chennai: A ranking of leading Indian deemed universities on the basis of scientific research conducted over the past four years would now include at least half a dozen privately-run institutions. The top 20 public and private deemed universities in the country have, between them, published over 20,000 papers and obtained more than 150 patents, according to Scopus, a global database for scientific research.
Funding from government agencies, collaborations with industry, and a research-friendly environment on the campus were the prime factors for the performance of these institutions, some of which have acquired ‘deemed university’ status in the recent past.
Among the 32 deemed universities, found fit in all aspects and classified in the A category by a review committee constituted by the Union human resources development ministry, the premier Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore has topped the list in terms of research output. The institution successfully registered 90 patents between 2005 and 2009 and published 7,979 research papers in acclaimed international and national journals during the same period.
“Research has been our strength and main focus since inception. Our faculty enjoy the autonomy to pursue research. Teachers on our campus spend comparatively lesser time delivering lectures, enabling them to spend adequate time on research,” a senior faculty member at the IISc said.
“We get funding for research from leading agencies like the Department of Science and Technology, Indian Space Research Organisation and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. We are also engaged in research partnerships with global organisations like Boeing, Microsoft and General Electric,” he added.
Data sourced and compiled by the Scopus, the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed scientific literature, puts Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in second place with 19 patents and 2,623 research publications. The institution also has a score of 36 on the ‘h-index’, which is widely used to measure the quality, productivity and impact of a group of scientists or a department or a university or country (see table).
Among private players, Manipal Academy of Higher Education is on top at eighth position with 1,620 research publications, 10 patents and an ‘h-index’ citation of 16. “We have obtained 8 patents for inventions in the field of pharmacy alone. The leadership given to us by our administration has helped us succeed in highend research. The environment on the campus also encourages research. Our Life Sciences Centre is carrying out research on stem cells, ageing process and early detection and prevention of cancer,” a spokesperson of Manipal University told TOI over phone on Tuesday.
The other five private institutions in the top 20 list are Sastra University in Thanjavur, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetam in Coimbatore, Dayalbagh Educational Institute in Agra and Chennai Mathematical Institute. Interestingly, the data shows that SASTRA university in Thanjavur, which was classified in B category (needs to improve) by the review committee, has a much higher citation in the ‘h-index’ than half the universities that figured in A category. The review committee had listed 44 deemed universities, which required improvement within a timeframe of three years, in B category.
SASTRA university has a score of 11 in the ‘h-index’, five patents and 302 research papers in its kitty. The university is currently engaged in more than 40 research and development projects funded by various agencies including the DRDO and Indian Council for Medical Research. Their Centre for Nanotechnology and Advanced Biomaterials is engaged in high-end nanotechnology based research in healthcare and energy applications.
The Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, the other deemed university from Tamil Nadu to figure in Table I, has published 511 papers with an ‘h-index’ score of 12, but no patents. Dayalbagh Institute has 176 papers to its credit while the Chennai Mathematical Institute has published 128 research papers and has a citation of 10 in the ‘h-index.’
