Engineering colleges likely to seek higher quota

Chennai: Self-financing engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu may seek a larger share of management quota seats in admission to undergraduate courses for the next academic year.

As per existing guidelines, private engineering colleges administered by minorities are mandated to surrender 50% of their total seats in each undergraduate course to the government quota for admissions. Unaided non-minority institutions have to surrender 65% of the seats to the common pool. The remaining seats can be filled up by the respective institutions, by following intersemerit, for which they can collect a higher fee structure, which is officially Rs 62,500.
However, sources in the self-financing colleges indicated that they might seek a revision in the seat-sharing formula. “Possibly, we may ask the government to revert to an old formula under which minority colleges could fill up 70% seats and non-minority institutions had a 50-50 seat sharing agreement,” a college owner said. Meanwhile, the first meeting of the Committee on Admissions headed by retired Madras high court judge Raviraja Pandian, was held here on Thursday.
