Madurai: The Madras High Court Bench here on Monday stayed an order passed by the University Grants Commission (UGC) on December 7 withdrawing the autonomous status of Saraswathi Narayanan College here. Justice S. Rajeswaran granted the interim stay following a petition filed by the College Secretary N. Thiagarajan, who alleged that the withdrawal order was passed without giving an opportunity to the institution to explain its stand. According to him, the UGC decided to accord autonomous status to the college after deliberations by the Syndicate of Madurai Kamaraj University on May 23.
