Arts colleges in State get a boost

Government sanctions Rs. 4 crore to improve its infrastructure

Dharmapuri: Rural students should develop self-confidence to achieve great heights, said R.T. Panneerselvam, Joint Director (Projects and Development), Department of Collegiate Education, here on Wednesday.
He was here to participate at the national-level seminar on "Applications of Medicinal Plants and their Diversity" held at the Government Arts College.

Releasing the souvenir, Mr. Panneerselvam said the students should have the social consciousness and inculcate the same to society. Mr. Panneerselvam said the Government has sanctioned Rs. 4 crore for the improvement of infrastructure development of the Government Arts Colleges in the state for the year 2010-11. He also hailed the Government's gesture for allocating Rs. 200 crore for the past three years to improve the infrastructure development of government colleges in the state on a par with the private colleges.

He said 1,500 lecturers would be appointed soon. The problem of shortage of non-teaching staff would be solved within three months, Mr. Panneerselvam said.

The Joint Director also announced that the Directorate of Collegiate Education has sanctioned Rs. 25 lakh to develop the Chemistry lab at Dharmapuri Government Arts College besides allocating 25 computers.

In his inaugural address, M. Thangaraju, Vice-Chancellor, Periyar University, Salem, asked the researchers on medicinal plants to meet the elders in the villagers, who had great knowledge about it.

In her special address Collector P. Amutha said our country has indigenous knowledge and abundant natural wealth. It has great value in Gulf nations and the rest of the world.

More than 500 delegates from 35 colleges participated in the seminar.

Earlier, Mr. Thangaraju inaugurated the Internet Centre for the IAS Coaching Academy and an exhibition of medicinal plants.
