Rs.11 crore for construction of engineering college buildings

Land acquired for Central University in Tiruvarur


Nagapattinam: Nearly Rs.11 crore would be spent for construction of classrooms and buildings for the Government Engineering College started in September last year at Tirukkuvalai, the birth place of Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi in Nagapattinam district, said K.Ponmudy, Minister for Higher Education, on Monday.
Classes in school campus
The Minister, who inspected the site for the engineering college, said that classes for first year engineering students were now being conducted at Anjuham Muthuvelar Government Higher Secondary School campus in Tirukkuvalai and pointed that 27 acres of land had been acquired at a cost of Rs.41 lakh for construction of the college.
He said that all the classrooms for the college would be constructed in the next academic year.

Mr Ponmudy also inspected the accommodation being provided for the first year engineering students in the school campus.

U.Mathivanan, Minister for Dairy Development, M.Jayaraman, Collector, Prof.V.Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor of Anna University, Tiruchi, A.K.S.Vijayan, MP and other officials accompanied the Minister.
Tiruvarur
Higher Education Minister K.Ponmudi has said that 284 acres of temple land and 170 acres of private land have been acquired at Vandampalayam near Tiruvarur for setting up the Central University.
Temporary location
He told presspersons at Tiruvarur that the University would function initially at a building in the Collectorate complex.

He inspected the building on Monday along with U.Mathivanan, Dairy Development Minister, and M.Chandrasekaran, Collector.

Later, he saw the stage arrangements for the foundation stone-laying ceremony for the university on February 14.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will inaugurate the University and lay the foundation stone. Union Minister for Human Resource Development Arjun Singh will participate in the function.
