MBA education gets a uniform AICTE code
From the coming academic year (2009-10), colleges and universities across the country cannot admit students for the Masters in Business Administration (MBA) programme after August 14. The institutions must also commence teaching by August 16.
Institutions which are affiliated to universities must adhere to stipulations laid down by the respective universities.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has finally introduced guidelines to streamline management education in the country. “We decided to regulate the conduct of management programmes after we found that different institutions were adopting their own academic calendars which affected summer internships and placement activities,” an AICTE official told The Times of India on Thursday.
Different academic calendars led to confusion and also to allegations of dilution in standards.
A task force, which studied the issue, has recommended that “all institutions offering university-affiliated management programme shall strictly adhere to the academic calendar as prescribed by the affiliating university; similarly, the temporal plan (semester or trimester) for such courses shall also be strictly the same as prescribed by the affiliating university.”
The guidelines say that institutions which offer standalone management programmes (not affiliated to a university) “must ensure that each semester should be of at least 16 weeks duration and at least 80 days of teaching/ classroom interaction must take place in a semester.” If an institute follows trimester pattern then it must ensure that each trimester comprises of 12 weeks and at least 50 days of teaching/classroom interaction must take place in single trimester.
“The final examination for MBA and Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) programmes must be conducted by May 15 every year and the summer training and placement must be of 8-10 weeks duration, preferably at the end of the first two semesters or first three trimesters,” the guidelines stipulate in respect of institutions that are not affiliated to universities.
Nomenclature: To bring in uniformity, the AICTE has also notified approved nomenclature for management courses, including their duration and eligibility requirements for admission. At present institutions offer management programmes using different nomenclature which creates confusion in the minds of students and employers.
From now on, only institutions which have been running approved full-time management courses for at least three years can offer parttime MBA or PGDM programmes. Likewise, Executive MBA/ Executive PGDM programme can be offered only by institutions which fulfil all the norms for offering full-time MBA/PGDM programme.
