OFFERS GALORE: V. K. Sanjeevi, General Manager, BSNL, Madurai, centre, and G. Thiruvasgam, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University, Coimbatore, left, sign an MoU in the city on Friday.

Madurai: Concessions were offered to students by Bharathiar University in order to bring more people into the higher education fold, said its Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam here on Friday.
Signing a memorandum of understanding with Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, Madurai, to provide several concessions to those who enrolled for MBA and MCA courses through distance education mode, Dr. Thiruvasagam said that making higher education viable and accessible to people was a major challenge faced by educational institutions.

The Tenth Plan stipulated a 15 per cent (of those who finished school education) target for enrolment in courses of higher education. But the achievement was only six per cent. In the Eleventh Plan, a target of at least 20 per cent had been fixed and it would be difficult to achieve it with the existing universities and colleges. Hence, Bharathiar University wanted to improve enrolment in the distance education stream to reach the target, the Vice-Chancellor said.

In this endeavour, it had signed several memoranda of understanding, including with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, and offered fee waiver or concessions. Those who enrolled for CA course would automatically become eligible to pursue a course in Bharathiar University through distance education. They need not repeat the papers they would study in CA. The present MoU with the BSNL, Madurai, he said, was to attract more students to MBA and MCA courses. It would not be compulsory for students to attend contact seminar classes. The university also offered fee waiver for the physically disabled and fee concession for women, defence personnel, teachers and other select sections of society.

Online lessons
From March 1, distance education students would have the option of receiving lessons online. They could also take tests and assignments online, the Vice-Chancellor said. Efforts were on to conduct online examinations in two years' time.

The General Manager, Madurai BSNL, V. K. Sanjeevi, said that the MoU would help students in a big way. In its service to the country, the BSNL had come out with several concessions to the common man in order to provide connectivity. It had tied up with a private agency to establish common Internet service centres with broadband connectivity in villages. Its concessional offer of broadband connectivity to colleges virtually brought these institutions, located on the outskirts, into the city environment.
